Peggy Lee
With a career spanning six decades, PEGGY LEE was known for her alluring tone, distinctive delivery, breadth of material and incredible songwriting skills, making her one of the most captivating artists of her era. From her breakthrough on the Benny Goodman hit “Why Don’t You Do Right” to her many solo successes, including “Fever,” “I’m a Woman” and “Is That All There Is?,” Miss Lee showcased her bewitching vocal power, a balance between sultry swing and impeccable musicianship.
She is one of the industry’s original singer-songwriters, having written or co-written more than two hundred songs, many of which have become standards and re-recorded by such singers as Tony Bennett, Nat “King" Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Bing Crosby, Diana Krall, Mel Tormé, Natalie Cole and kd lang. She also wrote the lyrics for all of the original songs in Disney's Lady and the Tramp and performed four of the character voices in the beloved film. Throughout her career, Miss Lee maintained a rigorous touring schedule in the U.S. and abroad and also appeared on numerous television shows. In addition to her music, she also appeared in several films, one of which, Pete Kelly’s Blues, garnered her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Miss Lee was nominated for 12 Grammy Awards, winning in 1969 for "Is That All There Is?" In 1995, she won the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 1999, she was inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame.
In 2020, The ASCAP Foundation announced the creation of the Peggy Lee Songwriter Award in her honor.
