We are pleased to inform you that our negotiations with TikTok have resulted in a new agreement. Music from UMPG songwriters and administered catalogs will be available on the platform shortly. We are happy to say that this is a multi-dimensional licensing deal that will deliver significant industry-leading benefits for UMPG’s global family of songwriters, artists and rightsholders, including:
• Industry-leading protections with respect to generative AI.
• Improved remuneration for UMPG’s songwriters and artists.
• New promotional and engagement opportunities for your songs.
• Strengthened online safety protections.
• In addition, TikTok will work on tools to improve songwriter and artist attribution.
We are now working expeditiously to return music by UMPG songwriters to the platform, with TikTok estimating it should return within one to two weeks. Further, all videos that had previously been muted will be unmuted.
On AI, TikTok and UMPG will work together to ensure AI development across the music industry will protect human artistry and the economics that flow to those songwriters and artists. TikTok is also committed to working with UMPG to remove unauthorized AI-generated music from the platform.
As part of the agreement, UMPG will work together with TikTok to realize new monetization opportunities utilizing their growing e-commerce capabilities and on campaigns supporting UMPG’s songwriters and artists across genres and territories globally. TikTok will continue to invest significant resources into building tools that will help UMPG songwriters and artists realize their potential on the growing platform.
We understand that the short-term removal of music from TikTok has caused some disruption for some of you, confusion for fans, as well as a period of uncertainty across the broader music community, but we strongly believe it was necessary in order to protect the long-term interests, rights, and value of your work.
We would like to thank you for your patience and understanding over the past few months. We will always fight for the fair value of your songs.
