Ilse de Lange’s ‘This Isn’t Really Love’ is the title track to Dutch movie ‘ Tegendraads’
It’s 1961 in the small town of Oldenzaal (Twente, the Netherlands): the village is rocked by the arrival of a large group of Italian workers, called in to provide extra hands to the fast-growing textile industry. Due to resistance to the guest workers and the poor position of women in society, the situation escalates.
Based on a true story, ‘Tegendraads’ (‘Against The Grain’ ) follows Johanna (a young factory worker) and Francesco (an Italian migrant worker) as they navigate through the disappointing conditions in the Netherlands, both dreaming of a better existence.
With ‘This Isn’t Really Love’ , Ilse perfectly captures the hardships of letting go and pursuing your dreams in spite of everything.
Director Ben Sombogaart: "After a previous successful collaboration, a title song by Ilse once again brilliantly closes a film of mine.
During ‘This Isn't Really Love’, protagonist Johanna and Ilse DeLange merge into the same ambitious, contrary girl from Twente, chasing a dream."
Ilse DeLange: "I am honoured that “This Isn't Really Love” gets such a wonderful place in this beautiful film by Ben. I come from the same area and I recognise myself very much in Johanna's ambition that comes with a lot of uncertainty.
She continues to pursue her dream against all odds. My song describes that, when love limits you in your dreams and happiness, it is not real love."
