Elton John releases his 33rd studio album ‘Wonderful Crazy Night’ today via Virgin EMI Records.
The new album continues Elton’s long-time writing partnership with Bernie Taupin, and was written and recorded in Los Angeles in just 17 days, with core band members convening at the venerable Village studio. “It was very much the same way we made ‘Yellow Brick Road’ or ‘Honky Chateau’ in the Seventies”, explains Elton. “I’d go in there and write the song in the morning, the band would come in and learn the chords, we’d run through a couple of times and put it down straight away.”
The Guardian award 4 stars, hailing it “a convincing return to his Americana roots… It sounds like they’re having a blast.” The Independent (4 stars) add: “His sheer fervour for his craft puts many pretenders a third his age to shame.”
Talking about the album, Elton said: “This is a raucous rock 'n' roll record. I wanted a guitar record, I wanted something joyous, something you can play in arenas. I don’t think I have ever made such an uptempo, energetic album. It just bangs away!”
