Alanis Morissette’s seminal studio album ‘Jagged Little Pill’ has re-entered the album Top 40 UK album charts after featuring in BBC2 comedy series ‘The Trip to Italy.’ Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill

The show sees Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon embark on a road trip round Italy on the premise of reviewing restaurants, but the food plays second fiddle to the crackling comic dialogue thrown back and forth between the pair.

With only one CD to listen to in the car – ‘Jagged Little Pill’ by Alanis Morissette – the album becomes a central feature of the road trip, with both Coogan and Brydon regularly singing along at the tops of their voices to tracks such as ‘Hand in My Pocket’ and ‘You Oughta Know’.

Writing about the music’s role in the show, The Guardian comments that “a couple of middle-aged men trundling around Italy in a Mini, sometimes talking over the top of the music, sometimes singing along,” is far removed from the usual role of sync in TV and film, but partly due to the unconventional way it’s used “the music becomes as one with the mood of the show – sometimes sad, but usually warm, funny and often tender.”

‘The Trip to Italy’ is currently showing on BBC2. A feature film version has just premiered at the Sundance Film festival London.
