The Beach Boys for the launch of BBC Music

The BBC has united 27 artists from the world of music for the launch of its new BBC Music initiative.

The star studded line up, including UMPG signed artists Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys), Sir Elton John, Chris Martin (Coldplay), Florence Welch and Paloma Faith form an unlikely supergroup to cover The Beach Boys’ masterpiece ‘God Only Knows’ (published by Universal Music Publishing through Rondor).

With all proceeds being donated to Children In Need, the project is evocative of the BBC’s 1997 ‘Perfect Day’ single.

The ‘God Only Knows’ video was filmed in Alexandra Palace Theatre, the home of the first BBC broadcast over 90 years ago. It was shot on a green screen with special effects added afterwards.

Talking about the project, Brian Wilson said he felt “incredibly humbled” his song had been chosen to represent BBC Music, adding “All of the artists did such a beautiful job. I can’t thank them enough. ‘God Only Knows’ is a very special song, an extremely spiritual song and one of the best I’ve ever written.”

BBC Music has been set up to celebrate musical talent in the UK and beyond. It marks the beginning of “an ambitious wave of new programmes, innovative partnerships and ground-breaking music initiatives that amount to the BBC’s strongest commitment to music in 30 years.”
