Crystal Castles have released their third studio album ‘III’.
The album was recorded mostly in Warsaw and Berlin, with the duo (Ethan Kath and Alice Glass) taking a distinct approach from their previous LPs. “We wanted the new album to sound like a completely different and new experience," says Ethan. “We'd limit ourselves to one take on each song because we believe the first take is the rawest expression of an idea." They also took a strictly analogue approach, enforcing a ‘no computers’ rule, and recording everything direct to tape.
Talking about the album Alice explains, “Oppression is a theme, in general… A lot of bad things have happened to people close to me since ‘II’ and it's profoundly influenced my writing as I've realized there will never be justice for them." The result is an incredibly powerful record that jumps from the heights of euphoria to depths of despair sometimes within one track.
The album has already caused a stir amongst fans and critics alike, with NME awarding it 9/10 and declaring,“Being doomed never sounded so beautiful” whilst The Independent (4/5) suggest, “If the Mayans were right and the world really is going to end this December, you won't hear many better soundtracks than this.”
