Two years after his eponymous debut album, James Blake returns with his second LP ‘Overgrown’. The album sees James moving way beyond any post-dubstep pigeonholes to include stunning reinterpretations of both hip-hop and house.
“Instinctively I’ve gravitated towards wanting to make music that people will really remember and love” he says. “It’s an emotional impact I’m looking for.” ‘Overgrown’ moves from the jet-lagged hip hop of ‘Take a Fall For Me’ to a hall-of-mirrors take on late 90s R&B on ‘Life Round Here’; from the dizzying house music of ‘Voyeur’ to the sensual lullaby of closing track ‘Our Love Comes Back’.
The album has received glowing reviews in the press, with The Guardian awarding 'Overgrown' 5 stars and noting “the abiding mood of James Blake's second album may be one of melancholy, but in every track there is a glinting nib of beauty”. The Telegraph award 4 stars, calling ‘Overgrown’ “music of emotion and imagination... intent on moving the heart rather than the feet.”
Talking about his constant thirst for change, James’s explains, “I probably won’t use a sound if it reminds me of another song and another time. That’s gone. It’s done now. Things should always progress.”
‘Overgrown’ is released on 8th April through Atlas Records.
