James Blake last night won the Mercury Music Prize 2013 for his superb second album ‘Overgrown’. He collected the £20,000 prize and the coveted winner’s trophy at The Roundhouse, where the awards were held. The judges described his album as “late night music for the digital age. An inventive, poignant and poetic record of great beauty”.
Speaking backstage, James described his reaction as “jubilant and confused”, modestly adding, "I feel like I deserved it as much as anyone else did."
‘Overgrown’ received glowing reviews in the press when it was released back in April. The Telegraph called it “music of emotion and imagination... intent on moving the heart rather than the feet.” NME named the album “one of the most nuanced, soothing and adventurous of 2013”, whilst Line of Best Fit awarded a rare 10 stars, asserting that ‘Overgrown’ “nudges our lives forward just by its very existence.”
