Metronomy release their fourth studio album ‘Love Letters’ today through Because Music.
‘Love Letters’ is the follow up to 2011’s ‘The English Riviera’ – which brought a West Coast sunshine spirit to the UK whilst gaining the band a Mercury nomination and rave reviews in the press.
‘Love Letters’ aims to do fresh things in an old fashioned way – taking an analogue approach to recording yet injecting the music with tight electronics and experiments in sound.
The result is songs that are bold and ambitious, but still with a sweet spirit and an edge of melancholy. New musical influences shine through, with the title track ‘Love Letters’ skipping between Motown and Northern Soul, and ‘I'm Aquarius’ inspired by Diana Ross and The Supremes. ‘Monstrous’ is about holding on tight to everything you love in a world you don't understand, whilst ‘Month of Sundays’ shimmers its emotions through bright, shining guitars. All show a warmth, richness and depth being added to the Metronomy sound.
The Guardian’s verdict is that “(Joseph) Mount and his auxiliaries have the skills to turn out great idiosyncratic pop.” The Telegraph note that “Mount… wrenches every last texture and nuance from his narratives of romantic despair with a simple but gorgeous palette of guitars, keyboards and sinuous rhythm tracks.” Clash Music reckon that ‘Love Letters’ is “Joseph Mount at his most inventive”, whilst Music OMH hail the band’s “triumphant return” adding, “the end result – probably due to mainman Joe Mount’s Midas fingers – is spectacular.”
