Today Fryars releases his long-awaited debut album ‘Power’ through Fiction Records.
Featuring the singles ‘Prettiest Ones Fly Highest’ and ‘The Power’, this ambitious debut was produced alongside long-term collaborator Luke Smith (once of Clor but know better known for his studio work with Foals and Depeche Mode), with additional production and mixing from Rodaidh McDonald (The xx, Savages, King Krule).
Speaking about ‘Power’ Fryars – aka Ben Garrett – said “It's kind of this thirty page script thing with pictures in. The whole album is basically kind of a movie, so it's running like a film soundtrack.”
Described by the NME as “a sweepingly ambitious pop record unlike anything else you’ll hear this year”, each of the 16 tracks on the album manages to harness its own individual style whilst still remaining connected through Fryars' all-encompassing vision.
Garrett refers to the narrative of the album as “a framework for my personal creative process and amusement”. This isn't a way of keeping the listener out but more a way of inviting them in to share it on as many or as few levels as they see fit. The songs are strong enough to work out of context, but as a whole, ‘Power’ has the ability to pull the listener into a whole new world for fifty minutes, and for those fifty minutes the rulebook goes out the window.
