'Shedding Skin', the third album from Mercury nominated MC Obara Ejimiwe is out today. The album strays from his traditional sparse electronic beats; recorded instead with a live band, thanks to a suggestion from Brian Eno.
This new approach continues the constant evolution of Ghostpoet and gives the album a raw, atmospheric feel, described by The Telegraph as an “insomniac groove to the gritty notes draining from electric guitars and a twitch of dirty old fluorescent bulbs in the glitch drum beats”. Accompanied perfectly by Ejimiwe’s powerful baritone it takes the listener smoothly through the album's dark topics and gritty narrative.
'Shedding Skin' is a self-produced album which features a diverse array of guests; Maximo Park’s Paul Smith featuring on track ‘Be Right Back, Moving House’. Other contributing artists include Nadine Shah and Lucy Rose, who lends her distinctive folk vocals to ‘Sorry My Love, It’s You Not Me’.
As well as continuing the progression of Ghostpoet's work, ‘Shedding Skin’ has also brought the experience of his punchy, emotional live shows onto the record. The album could be an ode to lost love, or could simply also be referring to those who try to limit his possibilities. Either way the taut, cryptic nature of his music will connect and hold the attention of a diverse audience.
