Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) today announced that soulful songwriter and musician Marie White has signed to a Global Publishing Deal.
From humble beginnings busking in Rye at the age of 15, performing soulful ballads, most of which were written in the early hours of the morning in her family home, Marie began making a name for herself in and around her hometown of Hastings.
Over the past 6 years she’s performed several shows without venturing too far from Sussex, slowly growing her name and crafting her skill – to the point where she entered (and won) Glastonbury’s Emerging Talent Competition this year.
‘An accidental musician’
A self-proclaimed ‘accidental musician’, Marie finds it hard to step away from her passion – she doesn’t want to write, she needs to write. She remains true to the “30-minute rule” – that a song should be fully formed within an episode of EastEnders – yet in those 30 minutes produces songs that could easily have taken months to craft. And it’s those very songs that helped her win a spot to grace the BBC Introducing Stage at Glastonbury 2019.
Speaking of Marie White, Caroline Elleray, Senior VP A&R said: “Marie White is a young singer songwriter from Hastings. We first saw her supporting Keane at a one-off show in their home town a year ago and have been spending time getting to know her since. She is much admired by some of our most successful songwriters and has a lovely self-deprecating style and delivery live that camouflages her amazingly brilliant vocal.
More recently she supported Keane again at the Royal Albert Hall and literally silenced the entire building with her songs ‘Time’s a Thief’ and ‘Out Of Time.’
We introduced Marie and her manager, Vicki to the Decca Records family at the start of the summer and we all saw her play at Glastonbury festival (she won the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition as Emily Eavis is a fan!).
Now, with a lovely sense of synchronicity she is signed to Decca Records and Universal Publishing and we predict a dazzling future for her.”
