Juan Gabriel, J Balvin and Paula Fernandes Take Home Major Latin Grammy Awards

Juan Gabriel, J Balvin and Paula Fernandes Take Home Major Latin Grammy Awards

At the 17th Annual Latin GRAMMY® Awards held Nov. 18 in Las Vegas, Nevada, Universal Music Publishing Group artists and writers received major awards and performed throughout the broadcast.

Pablo Lopez and Colombian superstar Juanes opened the show backed by cast members from Mystère by Cirque Du Soleil.  Later, Juanes performed his new #1 single “Fuego.” J Balvin performed his latest hit “Safari” (alongside Pharrell, Sky and Bia) from his album Energía, which won Best Urban Music Album.

Arguably, the most important award, Album of the Year, went to Juan Gabriel for Los Dúo 2, his top-selling and final album. Gabriel passed away unexpectedly in August and had never before won a Latin Grammy. He won two awards, including Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.  His repertoire was front and center, insofar as the Best Salsa Album winner, Intensamente India Con Canciones de Juan Gabriel, is a tribute album in which he guest-starred as well as was involved in the production.

Other highlights included Best Sertaneja Music Album for Paula Fernandes’ Amanhecer, and Alejandro Sanz’ 21st Latin Grammy with “Sirope Vivo” for Best Long Form Video.
