Gabrielle Aplin's debut album ‘English Rain’, released on 13th May through Parlophone Records, has entered the UK album charts at No. 2. The album was recorded with Mike Spencer (Rudimental, Alex Clare) in his Buckingham studio over a period of 6 months. Gabrielle wrote or co-wrote all the new songs on the album, and played the majority of the instruments herself.
Her songs are both timeless and of-the-moment; big songs, but songs that are intimate too. ‘Home’, for example, is an emotive, emotion tapping hit-in-waiting with a huge, choral sweep - and was an iTunes Single of The Week. The instantly singalong ‘Please Don’t Say You Love Me’ charted at No. 6 on the singles chart, and ‘Panic Cord’ is Gabrielle’s uptempo and uplifting take on the ups and downs of relationships put to a foot stomping beat. Then there’s ‘Ready To Question’, a rollicking number that touches on sea-shanties, roots music and gospel, and was inspired by her love of the soundtrack to ‘O Brother Where Art Thou?’
Talking about her musical approach, she explains “I think people have been drawn to my honesty and my openness… And being honest has gotten me this far. So I’m gonna carry on doing that… I am me – that’s it.”
